Pokémon Go best Ice-type Pokémon

Which are the best Ice-type Pokémon for Go Battle League and raids in Pokémon Go?

Ice-type Pokémon are just one of 18 different types in the world of Pokémon Go. Each has its own strengths, weaknesses and best Pokémon. Some, like Ice, are naturally cooler than others.

As of March 2025, there are 884 Pokémon out of a possible 1025 in Pokémon Go. Of these, there are 52 regular forms and two Mega Pokémon available - the lowest of any type, and just over a third of the biggest cohort (Normal).

The issue is that with such few options available, you need to know which are worthy of your time, Candy and Stardust, and which are not. You need to know the best Ice-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

So, to make life easy for everyone, we’ve split this page into multiple sections, including an overview of what Ice-type Pokémon are, the top-five best Legendary Ice-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go and the top-five best non-Legendary Ice-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go, including a brief analysis of each.

On this page:

Best Ice-type Legendary Pokémon

Level for level, is a perfect Cetitan better than a perfect Avalugg? How does adding a second type change things - is Mamoswine better for having Rock typing, or is Weavile's Dark-typing more useful? Why is Kyurem White dominating Master League? As always, the strongest Pokémon depends on the situation, which is why our lists below come with a brief note for each Pokémon, telling you where and how it is useful.

As with our list of Best Pokémon in Pokémon Go, we’re going to avoid covering Shadow Pokémon and Mega Pokémon. Including them would pretty much knock everything else out of this list. If you want to read more about either of those, you can check out our best Shadow Pokémon and best Mega Pokémon in Pokémon Go guides.

And finally, it’s also worth adding that this is an editorialised list of Pokémon - it’s not strictly the Pokémon that do the most damage.

Here’s a breakdown of the best Ice-type Legendary Pokémon as of March 2025:

White Kyurem

White Kyurem types: Dragon/Ice
White Kyurem weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Rock, and Steel
White Kyurem recommended moves: Ice Fang (Fast), Fusion Flare (Charged), Ice Burn (Legacy Charged)
Main use: Ice-type Raid attacker, Master League, Adventure Effect

White Kyurem is not an easy Pokémon to get. You need to fuse Kyurem with a Reshiram using 1000 Blaze Fusion Energy, 30 Kyurem Candy, and 30 Reshiram Candy to get White Kyurem. If Kyurem knew its signature attack, Glaciate, the resulting White Kyurem will know Ice Burn. This move has a special 'Adventure Effect' on the overworld: for 5000 Stardust and 5 Kyurem Candy, you can activate Ice Burn - an ability that will slow the speed at which the catch circle changes size. Hopefully, this will make your Excellent Throws much easier to rack up!

There really is no comparison here, White Kyurem is easily the most powerful Ice-type Pokémon and it's not even close, which is pretty amusing when you see the next two Legendaries in this list. Spoiler warning: if it doesn't have Kyurem in its name, it's not worth the effort.

In terms of Master League, White Kyurem is exceptional. It has both Fast move and Shield pressure, a Fire attack for coverage, and stats that are simply disgusting. We're a big fan of this Pokémon.

Black Kyurem

Black Kyurem types: Dragon/Ice
Black Kyurem weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Rock and Steel
Black Kyurem recommended moves: Shadow Claw (Fast), Freeze Shock (Legacy Charged), Fusion Bolt (Charged)
Main use: Master League, Raids, Adventure Effect

Oh look, another Adventure Effect! For 5000 Stardust and 5 Kyurem Candy, Freeze Shock will stop the wild Pokémon you encounter from moving, making them easier to catch.

But this Pokémon goes beyond just having a cool Adventure Effect. Its stats are tremendous, making it one of the best Dragon-type attackers with Dragon Tail and Outrage. It is beaten only by the three best Mega Dragons.

As for Master League, it actually outperforms White Kyurem and the previous king of the meta, Zygarde Complete. The moveset we have recommended above is what we would use in Master League - sadly it lacks an Ice-type Fast Move, but that doesn't stop it being incredible in Raids where Ice-types are useful.

Kyurem

Kyurem types: Dragon/Ice
Kyurem weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Rock and Steel
Kyurem recommended moves: Dragon Breath (Fast), Glaciate (Legacy Charged), Dragon Claw (Charged)
Main use: Master League, Raids

Oh look, another Kyurem! The next-best Legendary on this list would be Articuno, and we simply cannot recommend you putting resources into the number-one chilly birb (yes, that's where it gets its name).

Glaciate is incredibly powerful, and essential to your success if you want to use it in Master League. At the end of the day, this is where Dragons play, and they're famously weak to Ice. Glaciate debuffs the opponent's attack by a stage each time you use it, which is pretty handy. The issue is that Dragon Breath is slow-charging. Like with Black Kyurem, an Ice-type Fast attack would be huge.

The Might and Mastery Season has arrived. The Festival of Colors is currently running in Pokémon Go. You can now catch Dynamax Pokémon through Max Battles. First, however, you need to visit Power Spots to collect Max Particles and complete the To the Max! quest. Don't forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.

Best Ice-type non-Legendary Pokémon

As a rule of thumb, Legendary Pokémon are typically stronger than non-Legendary Pokémon. However, if things were that simple you wouldn’t be here - a cynic would say we've just spoken about the same Pokémon three times. If the rest of the Legendaries are that bad, surely some of the Non-Legendaries are semi-decent, right?

Fortunately, some pseudo-Legendaries and even the odd regular Pokémon can go toe-to-toe with even the most famous Pokémon. Given that maxing out a non-Legendary Pokémon is generally cheaper than doing the same for a Legendary, it’s good to know how they stack up when a more budget version is available.

Again, this is an editorialised list of Pokémon, not simply those who have the most chilling kill streak.

Here’s a breakdown of the best Ice-type non-Legendary Pokémon as of March 2025:

Baxcalibur

Baxcalibur types: Dragon/Ice
Baxcalibur weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Rock and Steel
Baxcalibur recommended moves: Ice Fang (Fast), Avalanche (Charged), Outrage (Charged)
Main use: Master League, Raid attacker

Seriously, another Dragon/Ice? Well, if it works for Kyurem...

Vague amusement aside, Baxcalibur is a surprisingly excellent Pokémon. It is narrowly behind Primal Kyogre and Shadow Mewtwo as an Ice-type attacker, and ahead of Mega Abomasnow and Shadow Weavile. That kind of power is not to be sniffed at.

Pokézilla is an excellent pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, and easily one of the best Ice-type attackers.

In terms of PVP, it's basically bad Kyurem. It's a bit worse than Hisuian Avalugg and marginally better than Shadow Mamoswine. If you need a budget Ice-type Pokémon, it's a pretty decent choice. It's missing its Dragon-type signature move, Glaive Rush, which can only make it better, too.

Mamoswine

Mamoswine types: Ice/Ground
Mamoswine weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, Grass, Steel and Water
Mamoswine recommended moves: Powder Snow (Fast), Avalanche (Charged), High Horsepower (Charged)
Main use: Master League, Raid attacker

Finally, a non-Dragon! We were starting to get concerned...

Mamoswine has long been one of the most useful Pokémon in the game, for no other reason that it slays Dragons. It is phenomenal in Dragon-type Raids, putting even the scariest bosses in their place. Shadow Mamoswine is a demon in its own right, easily dealing more damage than regular Kyurem. It's not even close.

But it's 2025, does Mamoswine still stand up as a top-tier Ice-type attacker? We're happy to report that yes, it does. The regular version is even more powerful than Mega Glalie.

In Master League, it is definitely better to use the Shadow version if you have it, but the regular version is excellent, too. It takes down Zygarde, Dusk Mane Necrozma, Yveltal, Origin Dialga and even Rhyperior - all very good meta Pokémon. Mamoswine is still amazing, and we love it.

Galarian Darmanitan

Galarian Darmanitan types: Ice
Galarian Darmanitan weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, Rock and Steel
Galarian Darmanitan recommended moves: Ice Fang (Fast), Avalanche (Charged), Ice Punch (Charged)
Main use: Raid attacker

The last Pokémon in our list is the only mono-Ice type we are recommending: Galarian Darmanitan.

With its incredible attack stat, Galarian Darmanitan is one of those Pokémon you'd be happy to see in a Raid. Believe it or not, it is actually stronger than regular Kyurem in a Raid. This Pokémon packs an (Ice) punch.

The problem is that this power comes at a cost: it's a glass cannon. At low levels, it may not have the bulk to survive for long, so you'll need to put a lot of resources into making it last as long as it can.

Any other Pokémon after this has severely diminishing returns. Sadly, the Ice-type pool is so shallow that you run out of top-tier Pokémon very quickly.

What are Ice-type Pokémon?

Ice-type Pokémon are, unbelievably, those that live in and around ice... They've always been incredibly rare, with just five Ice types in Gen 1 (Dewgong, Cloyster, Lapras, Jynx and Articuno). It wasn't until Gen 3 that we got our first mono-Ice types (Snorunt, Glalie, Regice and if you count it, Castform).

Articuno is one of the original Ice-type Pokémon.

By and large, their most famous trait is that they take down Dragons, but they are also super effective against Flying, Ground and Grass. By the same token, they're melted by Fire, and shattered by Fighting, Rocks and Steel.

In order to save you from having to remember it, here’s a breakdown of the Dragon typing in Pokémon Go.

Super effective against: Grass, Ground, Flying and Dragon
Not very effective against: Fire, Water, Ice and Steel
Weak to: Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel
      Resistant to: Ice
      Boosted by: Snowy weather

Good luck finding the most powerful Ice-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go!
