How to upgrade armor in Monster Hunter Wilds
Including how to get Armor Spheres.
Although the option to upgrade armor in Monster Hunter Wilds can be seen right after you unlock the Smithy, you don't actually have the ability to upgrade armor until you reach Chapter 3 of the main story.
This can make some Large Monster hunts before this point in Monster Hunter Wilds, like Uth Duna, quite difficult to tackle.

How to unlock armor upgrades in Monster Hunter Wilds
You need to complete the 'Toward Fervent Fields' quest at the start of Chapter 2 to unlock the ability to upgrade armor in Monster Hunter Wilds. Specifically, the feature unlocks after you hunt the Rompopolo and watch all of the cutscenes after. All you need to do then is visit Gemma at any Smithy to learn about Armor Spheres and upgrading your armor.
How to upgrade armor in Monster Hunter Wilds
Once you've unlocked the ability to upgrade armor by progressing with the main story, talk to Gemma at any Smithy location, then navigate to the 'Forge/Upgrade Armor' option. From here, you can select any piece of armor you've already made, then press the 'Upgrade' option.
In the upgrade menu, select what type of Armor Sphere, and the number you want to use, in order to upgrade that piece of armor. Each Sphere type has a point value attached to it, and the higher rarity a piece of armor is, the more points you need to upgrade it.
Here's all the types of Armor Spheres in Monster Hunter Wilds, and how many points they give you:
- Armor Sphere - 10 points
- Armor Sphere+ - 50 points
- Advanced Armor Sphere - 200 points
- Hard Armor Sphere - 1000 points
