How to beat Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds
Uth Duna weak points, strategy and items.
Uth Duna is a Large Monster you first come across while playing through the 'Beyond the Deluge' Chapter 1 main mission in Monster Hunter Wilds, and it's also one that you can hunt repeatedly after you've defeated it for the first time.
This monster is a dangerous leviathan that likes water just as much as it hates you. Its Veil acts like a very sturdy shield, making Uth Duna a very tough fight in Monster Hunter Wilds if you don't come prepared with a good strategy.
Below, our Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna guide can help you beat Uth Duna with tips, weak points, and attack info. We've also detailed Uth Duna locations, and harvest materials and items to help you completely plan for the hunt ahead.

Tips for defeating Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds
Here are some handy tips for defeating Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Uth Duna is vulnerable to Thunder elemental attacks, and attacking its weak points (Mouth, Head, Tail, Foreleg) is the most effective damage you can do.
- Even if you can't use Thunder, don't use the Water element on Uth Duna, as its resistant to Water.
- Uth Duna is affected by Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blastblight, and Exhaust. These can be inflicted with items on hand, and sometimes by using items found in the environment.
- Pitfall Traps, Shock Traps, and Flash Pods are also effective on the Uth Duna.
- Bring Nulberry - Using a Nulberry will instantly dispel the Waterblight status effect (which decreases your stamina recovery rate) that Uth Duna can inflict.
- Repeatedly rolling can also dispel Waterblight.
- Destroy its Veil to weaken Uth Duna - Uth Duna's scale-like Veil covers almost its whole body, making your attacks less effective against it - but you can attack the Veil to destroy it and expose Uth Duna's true form.
- Attack on your Sekreit while the Veil is active - We found it easier to get out of the way of Uth Duna's dangerous attacks by riding our Sekreit while attacking Uth Duna's Veil. Then, once the Veil was destroyed, we'd hop off and unleash our best attacks on Uth Duna's weak points.
- Stay behind Uth Duna if you're a melee attacker - Although Uth Duna's mouth is its biggest weak point, it's really hard to target it without taking a lot of damage if you're a melee attacker. Due to this, we recommend attacking around Uth Duna's Tail area if you find you're taking a lot of damage in the fight.
- You don't have to destroy Uth Duna's Veil - Although we do recommend destroying the Veil, Uth Duna can become more aggressive and speedy when you do. So if you'd like to keep it sluggish, then you can actually target Uth Duna's underbelly and parts of its tail while avoiding the Veil to deal normal damage.
- Use the environment to damage Uth Duna - You can take a huge chunk of Uth Duna's health off by using your grapple to crumble fragile ruins above Uth Duna, when it positions itself below them.

Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna weak points
To beat Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds you should focus on attacking it's four weakest points and use Thunder elemental attacks if you can.
The Uth Duna's four weak spots are: Mouth, Head, Tail, and Forelegs. Its Mouth is a general weakpoint, its Head and Tail are breakable, and its Forelegs are also breakable (as there are two, you can break one, but not the other). Using attacks imbued with the Thunder element on these spots is the best way to deal with Uth Duna quickly.

Unless you're confident you can avoid Uth Duna's forward strikes by attacking from afar, or evading quickly, then we recommend you actually avoid the Mouth weak point, even though this is Uth Duna's weakest area. It's a tough area to be in when Uth Duna is delivering one of its many forward attacks, so it all depends on your confidence and skill level whether you would like to risk it or not.
It's also worth keeping in mind that Uth Duna is resistant to Water, so don't use attacks imbued with the Water element on it!
Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna attacks
The main Uth Duna attacks you want to avoid are from its front. This inclues a belly slam, arm swipe, forward lunge, twirl, and lunge twirl. Uth Duna can also use its Weak Roar Special Attack at any time, which temporarily immobilises you.
These may sound like very basic moves, but they all pack quite a punch. Due to this, we highly recommend attacking Uth Duna from the rear if you want to take a more defensive stance during the hunt. Then, when Uth Duna is slow and weakened, you can go to its front and attack its Mouth, Head, and Foreleg weakpoints.

Just watch out for Uth Duna's tail swipe, tail slam, foot stomp, and twirl while you're attacking its rear. Uth Duna can turn around very quickly, so make sure you're prepared to evade or run away if this happens, before returning to attack it from behind!
It's also worth keeping in mind that Uth Duna's attack speed changes depending on whether its Veil is active or not. If the Veil is up, then Uth Duna is relatively slow, but if you destroy its Veil, Uth Duna is speedier and more aggressive. While we recommend destroying the Veil every time it comes back to make targeting Uth Duna's weak spots easier, you can opt to attack under the Veil if you want to keep Uth Duna slow.
If you find the Uth Duna fight is too hard, or going on too long, remember that attacking Uth Duna's Veil while you're riding your Sekreit is a good way to avoid its attacks, while chipping away at the Veil until it disappears.
Lastly, keep in mind that you can deal huge damage by using your grapple to destroy crumbing ruins above Uth Duna, when it positions itself below them.

Monster Hunter Wilds Uth Duna locations
During your initial encounter with Uth Duna as part of the 'Beyond the Deluge' main quest, you can simply follow your scoutflies to find their next location and look for the monster icon on your map.
Uth Duna are native to the Scarlet Forest. When you're in this region, you'll be notified by a small pop up on the right side of the screen when the Uth Duna is available, and you can also check the Environment Overview map to see if a Uth Duna is available to hunt. To make tracking it easier, set up a quest to hunt the Uth Duna in order to follow scoutflies to its location.
Uth Duna can be found in areas 2, 5, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 15 of the Forest, but we've found that they like to roam around area 12 most often. When you engage Uth Duna in a battle from area 12, it tends to go to area 13, then area 15, before ending the fight in the watery part above area 15.
Additionally, keep in mind that Uth Duna are more likely to appear when there's a downpour of rain.

Should you capture or kill Uth Duna in Monster Hunter Wilds?
If you're looking to harvest specific materials for new armor pieces or weapons, then you should kill a Uth Duna. However, if you need one for other things, then you should try to catch it. In short, the answer is subjective depending on your current needs surrounding the monster.
