Congalala is the second Large Monster you come across while playing through the Scarlet Forest area of Monster Hunter Wilds, and it's also one that you can hunt repeatedly after you've defeated it for the first time.

This monster is also one of the more... smelly enemies you come up against in Monster Hunter Wilds, thanks to to its very gassy breath and rear attacks. That's right, the Congalala's most dangerous attack comes from its behind, so make sure you bring some Deodorant items if you want to avoid the annoying Stench status effect that limits the items you can use.

Below, our Monster Hunter Wilds Congalala guide can help you beat the Congalala with tips, weak points, and attack info. We've also detailed Congalala locations, and harvest materials and items to help you completely plan for the hunt ahead.

Tips for defeating Congalala in Monster Hunter Wilds

Here are some handy tips for defeating Congalala in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Congalala are vulnerable to Fire and Ice elemental attacks (with Fire having a slight edge), and attacking its weak points (Rear, Tail, Head, and Foreleg) is the most effective damage you can do.
  • While Congalala aren't greatly affected by any status effects, you can still use Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blastlight, Stun, and Exhaust on it. These can be inflicted with items on hand, or by using items found in the environment.
  • Pitfall Traps, Shock Traps and Flash Pods are also effective on the Congalala.
  • Avoid Congalala's rear - Getting hit by one of its rear gas attacks applies the Stench status effect, which limits your use of certain items - like Potions.
  • Bring Deodorant - This item instantly dispels the Stench status effect.
  • You can also dispel the Stench status effect by rolling through water or walking under a waterfall.
  • Try to avoid Congalala's breath attack, as it can cause Poison, Blast, and Paralysis.
  • Congalala falls over a lot if you manage to avoid its lunges, so take advantage of these moments by using your most powerful attacks on its weak points (like its Rear).

Monster Hunter Wilds Congalala weak points

To beat Congalala in Monster Hunter Wilds you should focus on attacking it's four weakest points and use Fire or Ice elemental attacks if you can. Fire attacks are slightly better than Ice overall.

The Congalala's four weak spots are: Rear, Tail, Head, and Foreleg. Its Rear is a general weakpoint, its Tail and Head are breakable, and each of its Forelegs are breakable (meaning you can break one, but not the other). Using attacks imbued with the Fire or Ice element on these spots is the best way to deal with Congalala quickly.

While its Rear is a weak point, it's actually risky to attack Congalala from behind, thanks to its rear gas attack that applies the Stench status effect if it touches you. Thankfully, Congalala is quite clumsy and falls over a lot, so you can damage its Rear (and other breakable spots) with your most powerful attacks when it stumbles.

Monster Hunter Wilds Congalala attacks

The main Congalala attacks you want to avoid are its breath and rear gas moves.

Getting hit by Congalala's breath can inflict Poison, Blast, and Paralysis, but its rear gas attack is even worse, as you gain the Stench status effect if it hits you, which limits your use of certain items - like Potions.

You can dispel the Stench status effect by rolling in water, walking under waterfalls, or using the Deodorant item. It's best to avoid these moves altogether though, as Congalala leaves itself open to attack from the sides while its using a breath or rear gas attack.

The other attacks Congalala uses are: a claw lunge, claw pound, and repeated claw swipes. All of these can knock you down, so take care if you see Congalala raising those claws. However, do keep in mind that Congalala falls over a lot after its repeated claw swipes, and this is the perfect opportunity to use your most powerful attacks on its weak and breakable points (Rear, Tail, Head, and Foreleg).

Congalala also takes some time to recover after using its claw lunge and claw pound moves, just not as long as it does after using its repeated claw swipes attack.

Monster Hunter Wilds Congalala locations

During your initial encounter with Congalala as part of the 'Forest Findings' main quest, you can simply follow your scoutflies to find their next location and look for the monster icon on your map.

Congalala are native to the Scarlet Forest. When you're in this region, you'll be notified by a small pop up on the right side of the screen when the Congalala is available, and you can also check the Environment Overview map to see if a Congalala is available to hunt. To make tracking it easier, set up a quest to hunt the Congalala in order to follow scoutflies to its location.

Congalala can be found between areas 2 - 4, 6-8, and 12 of the Scarlet Forest. Once you engage Congalala in a battle, it also tends to run between these same areas, often returning to the western edge of area 7 when weakened.
