Monster Hunter Wilds Desert Trotters walkthrough
Monster Hunter Wild's first mission and Back to Camp.
Desert Trotters is the first mission in Monster Hunter Wilds and serves as an introduction to some of the game's core mechanics, such as weapons and riding a Seikret.
Desert Trotters is also where you'll hunt your first monster in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Chatacabra. (Wilds might have a lot of cutscenes, but it does get down to business.) Alongside this, you'll also have to complete the short Back to Camp mission before you can progress to the Village of Whispering Winds main mission.
So let's get started in this monster slaying adventure in our Desert Trotters walkthrough for Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Wilds Desert Trotters walkthrough
Before we get into the meat of Monster Hunter Wilds, let's run through the introductory mission, Desert Trotters. This is very much the game's tutorial (well, opening tutorial - there's a lot of stuff to explain in Wilds) and, thanks to this, you shouldn't have any trouble completing it at all.
The mission begins with you chasing after a girl on the back of a Seikret. You don't have to worry too much about controlling the Seikret here as it will automatically follow the girl. What you do need to pay attention to, however, are the Wingdrakes. These will make an appearance after the girl gets caught in some quicksand.
You'll need to aim at one Wingdrake to grab the Screamer Pod and then fire it at the Leviathan Monster, which will appear in the middle of the quicksand. Don't worry about knowing the controls, they should appear on screen. If they don't, then it's worth checking your settings.

After a short cutscene, you'll be riding your Seikret again. It will continue finding its own path, allowing you to focus on the monsters surrounding you by firing your Slinger once again. You'll quickly come to a spot where a monster is hanging down from a stone pillar and you can pull this down by using your Slinger.

It's now time to pick your weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds! There are 14 weapons to choose from and, at the moment, you can only pick one. (Though you will be able to have a secondary weapon in the future.) For now, you can either choose your own weapon, ask Alma for a recommendation or take a look at our best weapon tier list for Monster Hunter Wilds. Personally, I went with the Bow - best to stay away from monster jaws in my opinion.

After selecting your weapon and testing it, jump onto the back of your Seikret. Yet again, it will automatically take you to the target area where you'll find the first monster in need of slaying - the Chatacabra. If you need some assistance, check out our how to beat the Chatacabra guide.

Once it's slayed, don't forget to carve up the Chatacabra's corpse or else you might miss out on some useful crafting materials. After doing so, head over to your companions and watch the cutscene which will bring Monster Hunter Wild's first mission to a close. To celebrate this achievement, you'll receive three Chatacabra Hides, five Lifepowders, Guild Points, the Windwards Lands award, Harlequin Prints: Blue nameplate and March of the Chatacabra background.
You'll also gain experience towards your Hunter Rank by completing this mission. The Hunter Rank is what marks your progression in Monster Hunter Wilds - beginning at Low Rank before reaching High Rank and possibly even higher… Your Hunter Rank has an impact on which monsters you can hunt and, further along, it will block you from progressing if you're not at a specific Rank. Hunter Rank experience can be earned by completing main missions, Investigations, multiplayer hunts and side quests, among other activities.
Guild Points, meanwhile, are one of the currencies you'll use throughout Monster Hunter Wilds. You can use it for a variety of activities, such as instantly repairing pop-up camps.
Finally, nameplates and backgrounds are customisations you can add to your Hunter Profile, which is accessed via the 'Info' menu. As you can probably guess, backgrounds change the overall background for the Hunter Profile. Nameplates, meanwhile, change the design of the nameplate displayed for you when playing online.
Monster Hunter Wilds Back to Camp walkthrough
Back to Camp is a very short mission you'll most likely not realise you're completing in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its purpose is to introduce you to the various facilities available at the base camp, along with encouraging you to talk to Nata. While checking in with Nata is an optional objective, it will give you more insight into Monster Hunter Wilds storyline and you can find him sitting near your tent.
The Guildmates you need to talk to are:
- Gemma - Who will introduce you to the Smithy where you can forge and upgrade weapons and armor for both yourself and your Palico. She will also give you two Chatacabra Hides and two Chatacabra Shells. You may want to make the Chatacabra armor set while you're here.
- Jack - Who will be able to sell you useful items. Just not right now…
- Olivia - Who will introduce you to the Training Area where you can test out the various weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds. Perfect for anyone who isn't quite happy with their original choice.

After talking to your final Guildmate, you'll need to head into the Expedition Command tent where you'll sit (or skip) through a cutscene. With that done, it's time to visit your tent. This is one of the most important places in camp, because your tent is where you'll manage your inventory.

Here you can transfer items from your Item Box (storage) to Item Pouch, craft items, sell items, change the appearance of yourself and your Palico, change your equipment, customize the Bowgun, change your Palico's deployment status, post or join quests and change the background music for the tent. There's a lot to do in the tent, so it's worth taking the time to familiarise yourself with all of the different menus as you'll be coming back here a lot.
When you're finished in the tent, head over to Alma for a chat and, afterwards, jump onto the nearby Seikret. You'll now begin the first proper mission of Monster Hunter Wilds - Village of Whispering Winds!
Hope you're enjoying Monster Hunter Wilds!
