A Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds isn't actually one specific type of fish - it's a classification for multiple types of extremely large fish you can capture.

You'll be asked to capture one for 'The Catch of a Lifetime' side quest from Kayana at the Scarlet Forest Base Camp in Monster Hunter Wilds. We highly recommend learning how to change season and time of day before embarking on this task, it makes tracking down a Whopper much easier.

On that note, here's how to get a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to get a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds

To get a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds you should look for pools of fish actively thrashing about with large fish swimming between them during the season of Plenty. Now, you can catch a Whopper another time if you want to but this season is the easiest way to ensure you can find one.

Also, Whoppers respond well to the Tuff Joint Bait lure that you get from Kayna when you start 'The Catch of a Lifetime' side quest. You can, again, capture a Whopper with a Common Wood Minnow lure but it's rarer and can take longer to get their attention.

We had better luck catching a Whopper, like a Great Trevally, during the day - so if you're finding it hard to track a larger fish down then you might want to change the time of day you're hunting in.

Our favourite place to get a Whopper is the large reservoir in Area 17 of Scarlet Forest. We've marked its location on the map below:

There's a pop-up camp site near the reservoir, and we highly recommend setting up camp here. It makes it easier if you need to change the season/time of day or travel to and from the area to reset the fish that spawn.

Now you know where to look for a Whopper you actually need to catch it - and it's not like other fish, you can't simply reel it in.

When you've got a Whopper on your line (you'll usually be able to see it in the water), it will start to pull on your line. To avoid getting tension in your line, and subsequently snapping it, you should move your line in the same direction the Whopper is pulling it. Keep following it and it will eventually tire out - you'll know it's tired as it stays still for a second.

Another thing a Whopper can do is jump out of the water to try to unhook itself. If this happens, move your line in the direction it's jumping and use your usual reel-in command to restrain them. Again, this can tire out the Whopper.

As soon as the Whopper stops fighting you start to reel it in by moving your directional controls like you would for a fast reel or slow reel. However, as soon as the Whopper regains energy you'll need to tire it out again.

Eventually, you'll fully reel in your catch and it will land on the ground next to you! We completed this task by catching a Great Trevally.
