Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds is a calm way of spending time unwinding after a hard hunt or a way to simply admire the environments around you (while always keeping an eye out for hungry monsters though.)

Also, fishing is a crucial thing to master in Monster Hunter Wilds, because you can get yourself a tasty base ingredient for meals that will help boost your Hunter's stats for a while and some fish even come with their own useful materials that can help you in your next fight.

On that note, here's how to fish in Monster Hunter Wilds, including how to get lures plus our in-progress list of all fish and their materials.

How to fish in Monster Hunter Wilds

To fish in Monster Hunter Wilds you need to select your fishing rod from either your Essentials Radial Menu or from your quick access inventory in the bottom right corner of your screen. You'll have the fishing rod very early in the game, so you don't need to do anything special to obtain it.

You should always be mindful of your surroundings and of monsters deciding that you'd make a nice snack. However, some places are quite safe to fish in and you can strategically place your hunter if you know what areas the larger monsters of your chosen region prowl in. We personally like the hidden cave behind the waterfall in area 8 of Scarlet Forest - it's nice and safe in here, plus the water is clear to see the fish, and there's usually plenty of fish to catch.

Then, of course, you need to find a body of water with fish in it. You can usually tell there's fish about because there are ripples in murky water, in clear water the fish will be clearly visible, and in most cases you can also see the tips of their fins sticking out the top of the water slightly.

When you've found some fish, you need to follow the commands prompted at the top of your screen to aim where you're going to cast your line. The white circle on the top of the water will show you where your line is going to land - try to aim somewhere near or between the fish you're after. The fish will move around and you can adjust your line later to lure them in.

Once you're happy with the placement, use the prompted command to cast your line out into the water. This is where your patience and skills will start to come in. In the upper right corner of your screen you should see several different commands for fishing, including moving the line around or jiggling it to attract fish.

Fish are lured to different things, some like it when you slowly drag the line back and forth, while others like sudden jerks of the line. So, when you're waiting for a bite, it's worth experimenting to see what the fish respond to. Usually, if they like something, they'll start swimming to the line/paying attention to it.

Also, if you're not catching the attention of a specific fish you're after then you should think about changing the lure you're using. Just like real life, different fish like different lures.

Once you've got a bite, use the next prompted command to reel your catch in. You won't always be successful here, sometimes the fish will grab the lure and then vanish again. We found that the faster you respond to the bite, the more likely it is you'll reel the catch in.

Sometimes, however, you'll get a fish that fights back. They can jump around or they can drag your lure through the water. If this happens, then don't panic, all you need to do is follow the prompts that appear on your screen to subdue it.

Also, if you've got a fish that's fighting back and dragging the lure, make sure you drag your line in the same direction to the way they're trying to pull you. This will eventually tire them out and you can reel them in. It takes a few tries to master this, so don't be disheartened if you lose them the first few times.

That's it! When you've captured the fish, details of your catch will be presented quickly on the right side of your screen.

How to get lures in Monster Hunter Wilds

To get lures in Monster Hunter Wilds you need to start the 'Seeking the Goldenfish' side quest. You don't actually have to complete this quest to get your lures, because you're given them at the very beginning.

To start this side quest you need speak to Kanya at the Scarlet Forest Base Camp. You can find her standing by the pool of water to the rear of the camp. If she's not here, then you may need to progress more in the story before she appears.

We do, however, recommend completing this side quest if possible because it's a useful lesson on fishing with lures and leads to future fishing-based quests from Kayna.

How to change lures

To change the lure you're using in Monster Hunter Wilds you need to equip your fishing rod and then hold down the command you'd use to change the coatings/ammunition type for your weapon. You can find this prompt on the right side of your screen just above your quick access inventory.

Then, all you need to do is select the lure you want to use like 'Golden Bughead' and it will be attached to your line.

There's no limit to the amount of times you can change a lure and they don't wear out, but you cannot change lures while your line is out. If it's out and you want to change your tactic, you need to reel your line in.
