Tips for defeating Yian Kut-Ku in Monster Hunter Wilds

Here are some useful tips for defeating Yian Kut-Ku in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Special Attacks: Minor Wind Pressure, Fireblight.
  • Stock up on Nulberry - Consuming a Nulberry will counteract the effects of Fireblight.
  • Evade to counteract Fireblight - If you don't have any Nulberry, then evading repeatedly will counteract Fireblight too.
  • Use Water, Ice and Thunder-based elemental attacks - Yian Kut-Ku are weak to all three of these elements.
  • Use Water, Thunder, or Freeze Ammo - If you've got a compatible weapon, using these elemental ammunition types will help you inflict a lot of damage.
  • Stock up on Puddle Pods - As a water-based elemental item for your Slinger, this will hurt the target.
  • Stock up on Frostburst and Frost Pod Slinger items - As ice-based elemental items for your Slinger, these will also inflict damage on Yian Kut-Ku.
  • Stock up on Thunder Pods - Again, as a thunder-based elemental item for your Slinger, this will deal a lot of damage to the target.
  • Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, Blastblight and Stun status effects are all effective - We personally liked to use Sleep, Paralysis and Stun on Yian Kut-Ku, especially if they're in a large group as it makes them more manageable.

  • Stock up on Large Dung Pods and Dung Pods - Yian Kut-Ku often like to be in groups of two or more, and this can mean you're stuck in a lot of trouble when they all decide you're their next meal. Dung Pods and Large Dung pods fired from your Slinger will help disperse the group, letting you single out a target when they split up.
  • Sonic Bombs are the best item to use - Yian Kut-Ku are really sensitive to Sonic Bombs, so stocking up on these and using them in your fight is highly recommended.
  • Flash pods, Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps also work - We preferred to use Shock Traps and Flash Pods when fighting Yian Kut-Ku because they're easier to manage when disoriented or immobilised.
  • Stock up on Health Potions - These monsters pack a punch and they can kill you in a few hits, so keeping plenty of Health Potions in your inventory is a good idea.
  • Use your Seikret - One of Yian Kut-Ku's attacks is particularly brutal and fast, the easiest way of evading it is to use your Seikret. Often, it's easier to attack from the back of your mount too.
  • Use your Environment - Yian Kut-Ku won't go down easily, so use any natural traps or terrain in the environment around you to give yourself the advantage.
  • Stop for a Meal - If you find your Hunter is flagging, then (when it's safe to do so) stop and have a meal to get some much needed boosts.
  • Use Energy Drinks - The Yian Kut-Ku has surprisingly fast attacks, so an Energy Drink or two can be useful.

Monster Hunter Wilds Yian Kut-Ku Weak Points

Yian Kut-Ku's weak point is its mouth, but its head is also breakable.

Attacking Yian Kut-Ku's mouth will let you deal high amounts of damage, but just be careful as this is where its Fireblight attack comes from and, in fact, most of its attacks are from its mouth. It's high risk, high reward.

Also, we recommend trying to break the head as soon as you can in the fight to weaken the monster.

If you're looking for other places to hit, we did find that attacking the wings and hitting the legs dealt a decent amount of damage - especially when destroying open wounds inflicted there.

Monster Hunter Wilds Yian Kut-Ku Attacks

Fireblight is one of Yian Kut-Ku's special attacks and it has multiple different ways of inflicting this on you. Each one is dangerous, so remember to use Nulberry or evade repeatedly if you're hit with Fireblight to counteract its effects.

One of the main ways Yian Kut-Ku inflicts Fireblight is by spitting out balls of flaming lava at you. It usually fires out three or four in a row, each one aimed in your direction even if you keep moving. To avoid getting hit, try to avoid standing still the moment you see fire bubbling up in the monster's mouth. Then, wait for it to fire a ball out and then dodge out of the way once it's heading towards you. Keep doing this while the Yian Kut-Ku is firing them out at you to give yourself the best chance of survival. However, keep in mind that the last one they fire out usually has a longer reach.

Another Fireblight attack to watch out for is when Yian Kut-Ku charges towards you while shaking its head side to side, spewing out pieces of fire/lava like substance as it does so. This inflicts Fireblight on the area around the monster and, of course, your Hunter should you be hit. To avoid getting hit, just stay out of its way once it starts charging towards you with fire bubbling up in its mouth.

One of Yian Kut-Ku's most dangerous attacks is when it sticks its head into the ground and then charges at you in a relentless pursuit. If it catches you, you can say goodbye to around three quarters of your health bar. Dodging this attack on foot is very hard, but you can make it easier by calling your Seikret as soon as you see the monster's head stick in the ground. However, if the Seikret has been dazed, then we recommend finding some cover behind a large tree or rock that a Yian Kut- Ku cannot break through.

Another attack to watch out for is when the Yian Kut-Ku pecks the ground. It does look like a massive chicken doing this, but if you're caught under its beak during this attack it will hurt. The easiest way to avoid getting hit is to attack their mouth and then dodge out of the way of it each time you land a hit, you're more likely to succumb to this Yian Kut-Ku attack if you're standing still.

There's one more to watch out for too, when the Yian Kut-Ku is airborne it can glide over you and try to attack you from the air. The easiest way to avoid this is to watch the monster once you see it taking off, if it's not gaining alititude to fly to another area then it's very likely this attack is coming.

Yian Kut-Ku are high rank monsters, and your first encounter with them will be during the 'New Ecosystems' main story quest near the beginning of Chapter 4. You cannot find a Yian Kut-Ku before Chapter 4 as this is when High Rank begins.

During your first encounter with a Yian Kut-Ku your scoutflies will automatically track it, making it easy for you to follow it when it moves from area to area.

When you're looking for a Yian Kut-Ku we highly recommend making a quest for it, this way your scoutflies will automatically track it for you and show you which direction to go in.

Should you capture or kill Yian Kut-Ku in Monster Hunter Wilds?

When you first meet a Yian Kut-Ku you won't get the choice between capturing or killing them as, for the quest, you'll need to learn to capture a monster.

However, after your encounter with them during the main story quest, you can freely hunt them and make the choice between capturing or killing this beast. When making this decision you should think about what your needs are, if you need specific materials that can only be harvested from its carcass then killing it would be your choice, but if your needs are different or you want to practice, then capturing it may be the better option.
