Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds is first introduced as The Black Flame during Chapter Two of the main story and it's got a devastating area of effect attack that can easily reduce even the toughest of Hunters to a pile of bones.

Hunting Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds is made significantly harder by the surroundings it likes to call home as some areas of Oilwell Basin can get very hot. Also, Nu Udra has a nasty habit of setting itself on fire when it's angry - which is just one of multiple things you need to know when facing Oilwell Basin's apex predator.

On that note, here's our Monster Hunter Wilds Nu Udra guide.

Tips for defeating Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Here are some handy tips to help you beat Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Special Attacks: Weak Roar and Fire Blight
  • Use water-based weapons - Nu Udra has a nasty habit of setting themselves on fire, its weak to any water element attacks so it's worth equipping yourself with that kind of weapon.
  • Posion, Sleep, Stun and Exhaust status effects all have an impact on Nu Udra. Try to avoid Paralysis and Blastblight as it doesn't do too much to help you.
  • Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps are effective against Nu Udra, but avoid wasting Flash Pods and Sonic Bombs on this monster.
  • Stock up on Water Moss - This material is your best friend when it comes to battling Nu Udra. Having plenty of it in your inventory will help you douse this fiery menace.
  • Stock up on Cool Drinks - The environments you'll face Nu Udra in can get very hot, which will drain your Hunter's health if you're not careful. Drinking Cool Drinks will stop the heat effecting your Hunter for a short period of time - so the more you have in your pockets, the better.
  • Use Chillmantle Bugs - If you see a Chillmantle Bug in any of the areas you're fighting Nu Udra in, then grab it. Your Hunter will consume it and this will also cool you down if you're out of Cool Drinks.
  • Make meals - When Nu Udra moves to another area and you're noticing that you're struggling, feel free to sit and grill a meal to give your Hunter a much needed boost.
  • Use your Seikret - Nu Udra is faster than they look and sometimes getting away from them is hard, so using your mount to make a hasty retreat, or attacking from the back of your Seikret is advisable.
  • Lure Nu Udra to other big monsters - Like other apex predators, Nu Udra is fiercly territorial and will fight any other large monster that gets too close. Use this to your advantage by luring Nu Udra to another large monster, while they're distracted you can get in some good hits of your own or take a moment to heal up.

Monster Hunter Wilds Nu Udra Weak Points

Nu Udra's weak points are its mouth, head, and six arms.

It's weakest point is its mouth, but this is very tricky to reach even if you've got a Bow as your primary or secondary weapons, simply because the tentacles will often block the mouth. If you can get to it, or even can just attack the head as it's breakable, then do so because it will seriously hurt the monster.

All six of Nu Udra's 'arms' (they look like tentacles) can be severed, which makes them great targets for most of your attacks. Also, by severing their arms you'll reduce the amount of limbs you need to keep an eye on as the attacks from these can cause a lot of damage.

Nu Udra can burst into flames, which is a problem, but you can use this to your advantage. If you douse the Nu Udra when it's on fire with Water Moss then its entire body will become weak for a short amount of time.

Remember to use Focus Mode to attack and destroy any open wounds you can see on Nu Udra as this will inflict maximum damage with very little effort. It'll also be even more effective if you destroy wounds on any of its major weak points.

Monster Hunter Wilds Nu Udra Attacks

Nu Udra will try to slam you into the ground with any of its six arms. These attacks happen quickly but if you see an arm being raised, just dodge out of the way to be on the safe side. You can try to attack the raised arm if you think it's safe to do so, we had a Bow and found it worked well with this weapon.

Also, once the arm is on the ground it will be extended out which gives you more of an area for you to target. Watch your back for the Nu Udra to follow up with its other arms though.

Another attack to watch out for is that it will swipe its arm or arms at you to try to knock you down. Again, as soon as you see any indication of an arm moving make sure you're out of its reach, they really pack a punch.

When you get Nu Udra suitably angry, it will ignite itself and its entire body will be ablaze. When Nu Udra is on fire, their attacks get more dangerous but you can douse them with Water Moss to put their fire out. However, if you don't have any or you've used up your supply, then we often found it safer to attack from a distance or from a Seikret until the blaze dies down.

Fireblight is a painful attack that can easily kill your Hunter if you get caught in it. This attack only happens when Nu Udra is on fire. If you see them lower their head, make sure you get as far away as possible - we found that the safest place during this attack is behind Nu Udra. The monster will spew out a consistent wave of far-reaching fire that will inflict Fireblight on your Hunter.

You can counter the Fireblight with a Nulberry or by dodging repeatedly, but we recommend a Nulberry because the effects of the Blight are so potent.

When it's on fire, Nu Udra also has a devastating AOE attack where it spins itself around and waves its arms around to then launch out multiple fire projectiles that come down on the surrounding area like flaming rain. If you're caught in a closed area with Nu Udra, this attack could be the end of you. If you see Nu Udra start to use this attack then simply try to get as far away as you can.

Also, while on fire, Nu Udra will use the same attacks it does while in its normal mode but combined with the flame they're much more dangerous.

Monster Hunter Wilds Nu Udra Locations

Nu Udra is the apex predator of Oilwell Basin and you'll first meet them when they're known as 'The Black Flame' in the Chapter Two quest 'Long Forgotten Flame'. During this quest you'll easily be able to follow Nu Udra from area to area by following your scoutflies.

After you've defeated them in this quest, you'll need to wait for Nu Udra to appear again if you want to hunt them down. If you're in the region and Nu Udra appears, you'll be notified by a pop up that appears on the right side of your screen that says 'Nu Udra has entered the Locale'.

To make tracking them easier on a hunt, create a new quest for yourself for hunting Nu Udra then follow the scoutflies to find your target.

Should you capture or kill Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The answer is subjective and entirely depends on your current needs. If you need materials from Nu Udra that can only be harvested from its carcass, then you'll need to kill it. However, if you need Nu Udra for other purposes then it'd be better to capture it.
