Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds is the first monster you'll encounter in Oilwell Basin in the first mission of the main story in Chapter Two.

Hunting Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds can be tricky thanks to the monster liking to surrounding itself with Oilsilt, which is hard for your Hunter to wade through on foot. Also, the monster uses this and its abilities to create dangerous explosions.

On that note, here's our Monster Hunter Wilds Rompopolo guide.

Tips for defeating Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds

Here are some handy tips to help you beat Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Special Attacks: Weak Roar and Poison.
  • Use water-based weapons - Rompopolo are weak to water-based elemental attacks, so using weapons of this type will give you an advantage.
  • Stock up on Puddle Pods - These items, as they're water-based, will also do a decent amount of damage to Rompopolo.
  • Sleep, Paralysis, Stun, Blastblight and Exhaust status effects all impact this monster - the only one you should avoid using is poison as it does very little to Rompopolo.
  • Pitfall traps, Shock Traps and Flash Pods are all useful against Rompopolo too. Shock Traps in particular are useful for stopping the beast from filling its gas sacks so you can heal or get a few solid hits in.
  • Stock up on Antidote, Herbal Medicine or Herbal Powder - These items counteract the effects of Rompopolo's poison if your Hunter gets hit with it. Poison will drain your health for a period of time, so clearing yourself of its effects is recommended.
  • Use your Seikret - The areas that Rompopolo likes to hang out can be hard to move around in on foot, so attacking from your Seikret when you can will help you avoid getting caught in any nasty Rompopolo gas explosions.
  • Stock up on Health Potions - If Rompopolo manages to catch you with an Oilsilt explosion, then your health will rapidly decline. Having plenty of Health Potions on hand to boost your Hunter will help you stay in the fight for longer.
  • Destroy its wounds - As with all monsters, destroying Rompopolo's wounds when they're exposed will deal significant damage to it.
  • Deflate the Rompopolo - Rompopolo is covered in sacs it fills with gas to attack you, target these to deflate them. Rompopolo is vulnerable when it's completely deflated.

Monster Hunter Wilds Rompopolo Weak Points

Rompopolo's weakest point is its tongue. Its other weak points are its head, back, tail, and forelegs - all of which are breakable. We recommend trying to break as many of these as you can to limit the Rompopolo's attacks.

As we said earlier, the Rompopolo is covered in gas sacs that it fills to fuel its attacks. The gas sacs near the front of its body are filled with and fuel its poison attacks, while the ones at the rear of the body fuel its explosion attacks.

Once you see any of these sacs begin to swell, or that they've been fully inflated, attack them repeatedly to deflate them again. Not only will this severely hurt Rompopolo, it will limit their next attacks. For example, deflating the sacs filled with poison will limit its poison attacks until the sac is filled again.

Also, Rompopolo will be extremely weak if you deflate all of its sacs at the same time.

Rompopolo's tongue is exposed briefly after specific attacks and this is the part you should prioritising targeting when it appears. You can use Focus Mode to get a very powerful shot on this area when it's exposed.

Monster Hunter Wilds Rompopolo Attacks

One of Rompopolo's main attacks is to create large explosions using its gas sacs. It will dig its stinger into Oilsilt and then it will begin to bubble up in specific spots, usually the one you're standing in. After a short moment, an explosion will occur that will send your Hunter flying if you're caught in it. As soon as you see the Rompopolo's stinger enter the ground and the surrounding area starting to bubble, make sure you're not standing in any of it to avoid getting caught.

Another one of Rompopolo's main attacks is them spitting out poison from their mouth with their tongue stuck out. As soon as you see purple mist starting to appear around its head, dodge as far away as you can to avoid getting hit by it. However, don't stray too far, as the tongue is often exposed and vulnerable near the end of this attack which is the optimum moment to strike it.

Rompopolo also likes to swipe its forearms at you like gigantic bug-like scissors. If you're really close to the monster then it's highly likely they'll whip this move out between its other attacks. To avoid getting hit by this attack try to keep moving, if you stand still for too long there's a good chance it will swipe at you and get you.

Also, if you're too close to them, then Rompopolo will lunge towards you with its tongue out and try to swipe you with it.

Monster Hunter Wilds Rompopolo Locations

You'll first come across a Rompopolo during the 'Toward Fervent Fields' mission in Chapter Two in Oilwell Basin. When you're hunting them as part of this quest, you'll easily be able to follow it from area to area by using your scoutflies as a guide.

Once you've beaten Rompopolo as part of that quest you'll need to wait for it to reappear again in Oilwell Basin if you want another shot at hunting it. When you're in the region, a pop up on the side of your screen will appear saying 'Rompopolo has entered the locale' which essentially tells you the monster has spawned and is ready to be found.

We highly recommend making a quest for hunting the Rompopolo as that means you'll be able to follow scoutflies to its location, and then use them to follow their path as they move from area to area.

On our Rompopolo hunts we found that they like to move between area ten and eight in Oilwell Basin.

Should you capture or kill Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Killing or capturing Rompopolo depends on your current needs as a Hunter. If you need specific materials that can only be carved off a carcass then killing it is the best option, but if your needs are different then capturing it might be the best call. In short, it's entirely up to you based on exactly why you're after the Rompopolo.
