Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds is the first big monster you'll come across in the main story, and it's one you can hunt repeatedly after you've defeated it the first time.

This big toad-like monster packs a punch, quite literally, with ore growing on its forelimbs which it slams into the ground in an attempt to crush you. It's long and slimy tongue is highly distinctive, but it's not enough to stop you in Monster Hunter Wilds.

On that note, here's our Monster Hunter Wilds Chatacabra guide.

Tips for defeating Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds

Here are some handy tips for defeating Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • It does not have a special attack, making it one of the easier monsters to hunt.
  • Chatacabra are particularly vulnerable to Ice and Thunder elemental attacks.
  • They're also deeply effected by Stun, Poison, and Paralysis status effects (so if you've got any items on hand that will inflict any of these, or there's something in your environment like a Stuntoad, then use them.)
  • Pitfall traps, Shock Traps and Flash Pods are also effective on Chatacabra but avoid wasting Sonic Bombs on them as they'll practically nothing to help you.
  • Dodge their incoming attacks, trying to brave getting hit will only result in you losing a large chunk of your health bar.
  • Avoid their tongue at all costs - As well as just not wanting to be licked by a big green toad-like monster, the tongue of the Chatacabra can actually do a fair bit of damage.

Monster Hunter Wilds Chatacabra Weak Points

To beat Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds you should focus on attacking it's three weakest points and attack with either Ice or Thunder elemental attacks.

Chatacabra have three weakspots: its long squishy tongue and it's two front limbs. We recommend attacking their two front limbs first to give you three weakspots to choose from during your attacks.

Chatacabra have pieces of Ore growing on their two front limbs and you need to attack this repeatedly to remove it. Once you've removed the growths, their two front limbs will be very vulnerable and due to the size of the monster they make good targets for your attacks.

It's also worth noting that the two front limbs can be broken, and in doing so you'll give yourself the edge against this monster.

Then, the tongue will be exposed for a moment after they do some attacks and the easiest time to attack it repeatedly is when the Chatacabra becomes tired. It'll be less dangerous to attack the tongue during this point also.

Though it's a big monster it's faster than it looks, so make sure you keep on your toes and dodge when it gets too close to you.

Monster Hunter Wilds Chatacabra Attacks

Knowing what attacks to watch out for will help you stay alive in this fight long enough to land plenty of attacks to defeat the Chatacabra.

One of the attacks this beast uses is tongue slap and swipe attack (when you see it, the name will make sense). The Chatacabra will swing its long tongue into the air, slam it onto the ground and then swing it side to side in an attempt to catch you with it. The easiest thing to do is dodge the tongue as it's moving while you try to land attacks on it (as this is a weak spot.)

Another attack the Chatacabra uses is a fist slam. As the name suggests, it lifts either one of its forearms up and then slams it into the ground. If you're caught under it or close to it, this will really hurt so dodge away as soon as you see the fist being raised. It will also do this with two fists sometimes.

One more attack to watch out for is a double-fist slam. The Chatacabra will launch itself into the air in a frog-like way then lean towards your Hunter and smack its two front fists down into the ground. Make sure you're not caught under its fists as it lands. This attack leaves its weak forelimbs exposed for a few seconds, so this is a good chance to attack.

Another attack to watch for is the charge attack. The Chatacabra will charge at you with its tongue out, though it doesn't look like it's moving very fast it will be on you within a few seconds so don't delay getting out of the way. Again, with its tongue exposed, this is a good chance to land some attacks on its weak spot.

Finally, just try to avoid getting caught by its tongue. Sometimes it will just stick it out and try to lick you but it will do severe damage to your Hunter.

Monster Hunter Wilds Chatacabra Locations

After you first fight the Chatacabra during the Desert Trotters main story quest, the Chatacabra will begin to appear in the wild for you to hunt freely. During your intial encounter with Chatacabra you can simply follow your scoutflies to find their next location and look for the monster icon on your map.

Chatacabra are native to Windward Plains and when you're in the region you'll be notified by a small pop up on the right side of the screen when they are available. To make tracking them easier, set up a quest for that monster then you'll be able to follow scoutflies to its location.

During our hunts we found that Chatacabra moves between area one, three, then area two in Windward Plains.

Should you capture or kill Chatacabra in Monster Hunter Wilds?

If you're looking to harvest specific materials for new armor pieces or weapons, then you should kill a Chatacabra. However, if you need one for other things, then you should try to catch it. In short, the answer is subjective depending on your current needs surrounding the monster.
