Tips for defeating Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds
Here are some handy tips for defeating Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Special Attacks: Minor Wind Pressure, Poison, Flash.
- Use Fire-based elemental attacks - Gypceros are weak to fire-based elemental attacks, so use this to your advantage.
- Use Ice-based elemental attacks - They're also weak to any ice-based elemental attacks.
- Use Flaming Ammo or Freeze Ammo - If you've got a compatible weapon, using ammunition of either of these types will inflict a lot of damage on the monster.
- Stock up on and use Torch Pods - As a fire-based item for your Slinger, this will inflict a lot of damage on Gypceros.
- Use Frostburst and Frost Pods - As ice-based items for your Slinger, these will also damage the monster.
- Keep an eye out for Gypceros to drop 'Chunk of Hard Rock' - Collect this piece when the monster drops it to create one Heavy Blunt Pod for your Slinger. Use this to inflict a lot of damage on the target.
- Stock up on Nulberry - Consuming Nulberry will counteract the effects of Poison.
- Stock up on Herbal Medicine - This also counteracts Poison.
- Stock up on Herbal Powder - Another option for counteracting Poison.
- Have Charred Lizard - Again, yet another way of counteracting the effects of Poison.
- Pressing buttons, moving or taking a hit counteracts Flash - Pay attention to your screen when inflicted with Flash, it will tell you what command to use to get out of the effects quickly.
- Sleep, Paralysis, Blastblight, Stun and Exhaust status effects all work - Do not use Poison, it has little to no effect on Gypceros.
- Only Pitfall Traps work - Any other trap or Flash Pod won't have an effect on Gypceros, so don't waste valuable inventory slots with them.
- Stock up on Health Potions - The more Health Potions or items you can carry, the better your chances are of staying in the fight until the end.
- Lure Gypceros to other monsters - Gypceros will often fight other large monsters it comes into contact with, so if you can lure one to a large monster you can retreat to a safe distance to watch them fight. The Gypceros will take damage and you can either hit them while they're occupied, or use this time to heal.

Monster Hunter Wilds Gypceros Weak Points
The Gypceros weak point is its head. The head can also be broken twice.

While attacking the head is ideal, it's also very dangerous because that's where the Poison attacks come from. However, attacking the head is worth it as not only is it a weak point, but destroying the crest on the head will stop the Flash attack.
We also found that the Gypceros tail is more vulnerable that than the rest of its body (minus the head) when it's at its shorter length. It does still take a lot of damage when it's extended, just not as much it seems.
Monster Hunter Wilds Gypceros Attacks
Gypceros relies heavily on Poison attacks that all originate from its mouth - which is good in a way because you'll know where to watch but also it's their weak point, so targeting it will be high risk but high reward.
Out of all its attacks, the Flash attack is the one you want to get rid of first by breaking the crest on top of its head. This attack has a long wind up though, so you have plenty of time to get to cover before it hits (or to exploit its 'open wound' on its crest as it charges up but this is risky). When you see the crest on Gypceros' head start to get brighter you need to find cover where you can't see it flashing. If you can still see it, then the Flash will impact you.
If this attack gets you, you'll be dazed and immobilised until you recover, and Gypceros usually likes to follow this up with its devastating tail attack.

One of the main attacks to watch out for is for Gypceros to spit out pools of Poison towards you. If the Poison hits you or if you run through it, you'll be inflicted with that status effect. To avoid getting hit with this, when you see Gypceros starting to spit stuff out of its mouth you need to move in the opposite direction. Also, watch where you're standing and make sure you don't run through any Poison pools.
Another attack to watch out for is for Gypceros to charge at you while shaking its head side to side, spewing out Poison around itself as it does so. To avoid getting hit by this, dodge out of the way when Gypceros starts charging towards you and try to mantain a good distance from it until it has finished charging.
Onto its tail attack, which is surprisingly fast and dangerous. Its tail when it's retracted is a small thing, but don't be fooled, it can extend it out with a very far reach and slam it into you. Getting caught by this attack will inflict a high amount of damage on you. To avoid getting hit make sure you're getting as far from Gypceros as possible when you start to see the tail grow. Also, if you're attacking the tail, make sure you're not standing in one place for very long as they can target you like this.

Also, in a very similar attack to one that belongs to Yian Kut-Ku, Gypceros will also peck at the ground if you're standing too close to it. Just like earlier attacks, the best way to avoid this one is to keep moving and stay away from the head when you notice it pecking.

Monster Hunter Wilds Gypceros Locations
Gypceros can be found in Windward Plains, Oilwell Basin, Iceshard Cliffs and Wyveria once you reach High Rank in Chapter 4 of the main story. Gypceros will not be available to you before Chapter 4 - so if you're looking for it in earlier chapters, it won't exist.
When hunting a Gypceros we recommend creating a quest for it, that way your Scoutflies with automatically track its location for you making it easier for you to find it and then follow it as it moves from area to area.
Also, pay attention to which region you're looking for a Gypceros in. If you're in Oilwell Basin you'll need items to keep your Hunter cool, and if it's in Iceshard Cliffs you'll need items to stay warm instead.

Should you capture or kill Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Capturing or killing Gypceros is entirely up to you. When deciding what to do with this monster, you should consider your current needs. If you need specific materials that can only be harvested from the carcass of a Gypceros then you'll need to kill it, but if your needs are different then capturing it may be the better option.
